Dürnstein Abbey
The history of Dürnstein Abbey begins with the consecration of a Marienkapelle donated by Elsbeth von Kuenring in 1372. In 1410 the expanded building complex was dedicated as a monastery when Augustinian canons were brought to Dürnstein from the Bohemian town of Wittingau. In the course of the 15th century, they built the church, cloister and monastery. Under Emperor Joseph II, numerous monasteries were dissolved. This fate reached the Canons' Monastery of Dürnstein on January 7, 1788. The monastery was abolished and given as a parish to the Augustinian Canons' Monastery of Herzogenburg, to which it belongs to this day.
